Detox

Detox is tough. There’s no other way to say it. The drugs you’ve been using have been poisoning your system for a long time. If you’re going to get well, your body has to go through a period of adjusting, where those poisons work their way out of your system.

Without appropriate detox treatment, your body goes through withdrawal. Maybe it’s not even necessary to explain what that is: you’ve probably seen it on some TV drama, or you’ve heard some poor guy describe his experience of constant vomiting, shaking, convulsing and sweating that feels like “the flu on steroids.” The body can’t keep foods down, the mind can’t concentrate, and sleep never comes. That’s the price you pay for putting your body through the hell of drug abuse.

In our opinion, it’s inhumane to expect someone to go through that as the first step in the process of getting clean—it’s almost as if the cure is worse than the disease!

That’s why we work with medical professionals who can alleviate the painful effects of detoxing. You’ll be under professional observation throughout the most severe stages of this process (which can last from one to three days), so your mind and body are healthier when you begin to participate in your treatment program.

Addiction is characterized by two different aspects of dependency: physical and psychological. The early stages of treatment (and detox in particular) are designed to address the physical element of addiction. Depending on the abused substance, there is a fairly predictable length of time required for the kidneys and liver to flush out the chemical components of the drug.

This doesn’t mean recovery has occurred, however. At this stage, there is no defense at all against the psychological grip of addiction. The process of detoxification is only a step toward helping an addict focus on learning new behaviors (and unlearning old ones) that can begin to weaken the stranglehold of addiction.

The tools you need to acquire these new skills and behaviors are woven into the treatment program at Florida Drug Rehab. If you’re ready to get clean, we’re ready to help you succeed. To speak with one of our treatment advisors, call us at (800) 231-8021.
